If your career has felt slower than you hoped lately, this is for you.
I see you. I get you. And I have a personal message for you today.
When I first moved to Los Angeles, I was rejected by the top ten commercial agents.I was told I was too tall, there was too much competition, and my personal favorite:“We already have someone exactly like you.”
Really? I’m sure she’s delightful.
But underneath the humor, it hurt. I would cry in my car on the 101 freeway.
Actually truth be told, I cried on every freeway in Los Angeles. If you’ve ever wondered whether your acting career is really going to happen, watch this…
After decades in this business, I’ve learned that there will always be circumstances we can’t control: slow seasons, rejection, fewer auditions, roles we thought we nailed that go to someone else.
More than 80 television and film credits, 100 commercials and over 1,000 voiceovers later, I’ve learned that success isn’t about eliminating uncertainty, but about how you navigate your way through it.
What I’ve also learned is this:
Your current circumstances don’t define you…
unless you let them become your identity.
That’s the key: realizing that this moment is just “one scene in the story of it all working out for you.”
But that mindset takes practice. And when you can stand strong amidst uncertainty, you stay ready for the opportunities you can’t yet see coming.
In fact, one of those slower seasons is exactly when the self-tape audition for Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat arrived.
I couldn’t control whether I’d book it.
I couldn’t control who else was being considered.
But I could control how I showed up.
I prepared like a pro. I trusted my instincts. I brought myself to the role instead of trying to guess what someone on the other side of the camera wanted.
And then I let it go.
That self-tape ultimately led to me booking a starring role in the series (that is now Emmy-nominated!)
Your slow season does not mean your dream is over.
Sometimes when it looks like nothing is happening is the exact season when you’re becoming ready for what is coming next.
You’re strengthening your confidence. You’re building resilience. You’re learning to trust yourself without needing constant evidence from the industry.
And you’re preparing yourself to recognize and rise to the occasion when it arrives.
That’s why I’ve stopped allowing one audition, one rejection or one slow season to become a story about my entire future.
The mindset that has helped me is this…
I no longer allow my current circumstances to define me, derail me or defeat me.
That doesn’t mean ignoring reality. It means refusing to give today’s circumstances authority over tomorrow’s possibilities.
Because you never know which self-tape will be the one.I certainly didn’t.
But I now know that thriving during a slow season is about mental game mastery and being ready when the opportunity arrives.
Your best chapter yet is closer than you think.
If you’re claiming that your current circumstances do NOT define your future, declare this in the comments below: “My current circumstances don’t define me.”
Sometimes the first step toward changing your story is choosing the one you’re willing to believe.
Love + Gratitude,
Wendy
