As we head into September, I’ve been thinking about how much can change in a relatively short period of time.
I’m so excited to share that Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat is officially Emmy® nominated, and I’ll be heading to the Emmys this month! 🎉
It’s been such an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful for every message, comment, DM, and email you’ve sent cheering me and the show on along the way.
But here’s the part I keep coming back to…
This entire journey began with a self-tape in my garage on a hot summer day in 2024, waiting for leaf blowers to pass.
It was in the middle of a quiet season when it felt like “nothing was going on.”
I had no idea when I pressed record that day where that one audition would lead.
And that’s something I hope every actor, creative, entrepreneur, or big dreamer remembers:
One opportunity can change everything.
The key is preparing like a pro
so you’re ready when it comes.
As I get ready for the Emmys, I’ve been reflecting on some of the biggest lessons this experience has reinforced for me. They aren’t really about awards or red carpets.
They’re about what we do before the breakthrough arrives.
Here are four lessons I hope you’ll carry with you wherever you are on your own journey.
Lesson #1: Pay Attention to the Signs Along the Way
Sometimes encouragement arrives exactly when we need it, and sometimes it appears in a place we never could have planned.
Recently, I had one of those moments underneath our show’s Emmy billboard.
What happened stopped me in my tracks, and when I shared the story, so many of you told me it moved you to tears.
It reminded me that while we can become so focused on the destination, there are often beautiful reminders along the way that tell us to keep going?

Lesson #2: A Slow Season Doesn’t Mean Nothing Is Happening
This may be the lesson I want actors to hear most.
When the audition for Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat arrived, I was in one of those seasons where I simply couldn’t see what was coming next.
From the outside, it may have looked like not much was happening.
But I had stopped believing that a quiet moment meant my career wasn’t moving forward.
I kept living. I kept growing. I kept working on myself. And when the opportunity came, I was ready to meet it.
I kept living. I kept growing. I kept working on my inner game and my craft. And when the opportunity came, I was ready to meet it.
That self-tape in my garage eventually led to one of the most extraordinary experiences of my career.
Your slow season is not a stop sign.
Sometimes you simply can’t see
what’s being prepared for you yet.
That experience completely changed the way I think about the seasons when it appears that nothing is happening.

Lesson #3: Your Mindset Matters More Than You Think
After more than three decades in this business, I’ve learned there will always be things we cannot control.
We can’t control how many auditions come in.
We can’t control who else is being considered.
We can’t control whether someone thinks we’re right for a role, whether a project gets greenlit, or whether the opportunity we thought was ours goes in another direction.
But we can become conscious of what we’re making those circumstances mean.
That distinction has changed everything for me.
Because when you stop allowing the outside world to determine your confidence, your happiness, and your belief in what’s possible, you get your power back.
And from that place, you show up differently.
You may not be able to control the circumstances.
You can control what you make them mean about you.
Learning to make that shift has changed the way I navigate both the quiet seasons and the exciting ones.
The Mindset Shift That Can Change Your Career

Lesson #4: Your Current Circumstances Don’t Define Your Future
This lesson goes hand in hand with the last one, but it deserves its own space.
There was a time when I believed I’d feel better after the breakthrough.
After the booking.
After the validation.
After the circumstances changed.
Eventually, I realized I was giving the circumstances around me far too much power.
I simply stopped postponing my peace until after the evidence appeared.
And ironically, that internal shift happened before one of the biggest external shifts in my career.
Your current circumstances are information.
They are not your identity.
A quiet season doesn’t mean you’re no longer successful.
A rejection doesn’t mean you’re not talented.
Something taking longer than you hoped doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.
And a dream you can’t see evidence of yet doesn’t mean it’s not unfolding.
Learning to separate who I am from what is happening around me has been one of the most powerful shifts of my life and career.

And If You’re an Actor, I Want to Help You Get Ready
Because here’s what I know for sure:
You don’t get to control exactly when your next opportunity will arrive.
But you do get to decide how ready you’ll be when it does.
That’s why I created my free masterclass:

How to Stand Out in Every Audition, Book More Work & Build Real Momentum
In under 90 minutes, I’ll share the audition strategies, mindset shifts, and practical tools that helped me book my starring role in Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat, along with roles on Grey’s Anatomy, This Is Us, and more… all from self-tapes.
You’ll discover how to approach your auditions and self-tapes differently, build confidence you can actually rely on, and create momentum even when things have been slow.
Plus, all attendees will receive my Unshakeable Confidence Playbook for FREE, the same one I shared with Television Academy members.
“What Wendy delivers in this free masterclass is more valuable than most paid programs I’ve taken.” — Miley M.
As I head into this incredibly exciting month, I’m carrying all four of these lessons with me too.
Because no matter how long you’ve been doing this, there is always another dream, another opportunity, another unknown, and another chance to practice what you know.
So wherever you are on your journey today…
Keep believing in yourself.
Keep preparing for what you can’t see yet.
Keep dreaming big.
And no matter what…
Keep going, Sunshine. 💛
